Transfer news: Everton approach for Sunderland and Leeds United-linked winger rejected

Sunderland are one of several clubs to have been linked with a swoop for Harry Wilson in recent days

The Wales international has found himself at the centre of widespread speculation in recent days amid ongoing uncertainty over his contract situation at Craven Cottage. At the time of writing, Wilson’s current deal in West London is due to expire at the end of the campaign, and as such, he could be available on a free transfer in the near future.

Indeed, Sky Sports reported last week that the attacker is “increasingly likely” to leave Fulham, although the Cottagers, for their part, would ideally like to keep the player. It is within this context that the likes of Sunderland, Leeds United, Crystal Palace, and Everton have all been touted as admirers of Wilson, and according to a fresh update from journalist Ben Jacobs, the Toffees have tried to steal a march on their rivals by making a late move for the 28-year-old this window.

It is understood that David Moyes’ men, who are in the market for reinforcements in wide areas following an injury to loanee Jack Grealish, have sounded out Fulham over the prospect of a deal, but have been knocked back in their efforts, with the Cottagers reiterating their unwillingness to sell Wilson this winter.

Everton have also been heavily linked with a loan swoop for Chelsea winger Tyrique George - another mooted Sunderland target - in recent days, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano even going as far as to state that an agreement had been reached and a medical booked ahead of a proposed temporary switch with an option-to-buy clause attached.

What has Fulham winger Harry Wilson said about his contract situation amid Sunderland transfer links?

Speaking to Sky Sports last month, Wilson himself suggested that any decision on his future has to benefit both him and his loved ones. When asked if he could provide an update on his contract negotiations with Fulham, he said: "Yeah, not a lot really. I'm fully focused on playing. I play football because I love the game and wherever I am, it's got to be somewhere where I'm going to play. That's what I played for before, that's what I love doing. If we [Wales] get to the World Cup, I want to be in the best shape going into that. I think what's going to put me in the best position is somewhere where I'm playing, getting the minutes, playing well.

"Hopefully scoring and assisting, I've been able to do that the last couple of months and then whatever happens after that happens. Fulham is somewhere I wanted somewhere to call home. For the last four-and-a-half years, it's somewhere I've been really, really happy here.

"I feel like we've had some amazing times together, we've won the Championship, we've had three solid years in the Premier League and I'm hoping this will be another one. But this next contract has got to be right for me and my family. So yeah, we'll see what happens."
