Newcastle United transfers: Sky Sports have shut down the transfer claim linking Sandro Tonali with a shock move to Arsenal on deadline day.

On Monday morning, Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg claimed Arsenal are exploring a move for Tonali but agreeing a deal with Newcastle so late in the window will be ‘very difficult’.

He wrote on X: “EXCLUSIVE | Arsenal are exploring a surprising Deadline Day move for Sandro #Tonali. Very difficult at this stage, as Newcastle have rejected an initial approach. @SkySportDE.”

Sky Sports shut down Sandro Tonali transfer story

The story was broadcast on Sky Sports but was quickly rubbished by sources at Newcastle. Tonali is not for sale and the club have claimed no approach has been made despite the reports.

Sky Sports then shut down their sister outlet’s claims by stating: “Newcastle have had no approach from Arsenal for Sandro Tonali, despite a report by Sky Germany this morning.

“Newcastle have had no contact, don't expect any, and would not welcome any - for a player who is contracted until summer 2029.”

Sky Sports presenter Jessica Creighton added: “In regards to Tonali potentially leaving [Newcastle] to Arsenal, no truth in those reports.”

Sandro Tonali on Newcastle United future

Tonali has previously admitted his future could be away from Newcastle in interviews earlier this season, but insists he is happy on Tyneside, having welcomed the birth of his first child, Leonardo, last month.

“This is a tough question because in football, you need to think year on year,” Tonali said when asked about his future at Newcastle back in November.

“I don’t want to say ‘I want to stay here 10 years’ and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year.

“This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football.

“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

The story has quickly been played down by sources at Newcastle, with the player set to stay at the club.

Although Tonali’s form has been called into question in recent months, he remains an important, highly valued player at Newcastle.
