Arsenal have until the transfer deadline at 7pm to complete any final bits of business
Arsenal are being linked with a late move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, they are exploring a possible swoop for the Italy international. They have until the deadline at 7pm to get a deal over the line.
The Gunners remain top of the Premier League table after 24 fixtures. They won 4-0 away at Leeds United over the weekend. Manchester City and Aston Villa both dropped points against Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford respectively.
Arsenal linked with surprise Sandro Tonali move
Arsenal may be forced into some last-gasp business following Mikel Merino’s injury. They could do with some cover in the middle of the park. Merino’s setback means they could be left short of options in his position.
Tonali, 25, is under contract at Newcastle until June 2028 so they are under no immediate pressure to sell him. He has been with the Magpies since joining them back in 2023. Prior to his switch to England, he had spells at Brescia and AC Milan and caught the eye in his native country.
He has since become a key player for the North East outfit and they won’t want to lose him anytime soon, especially to a team in the same league. The Lodi-born man has since made 91 appearances in all competitions, 34 of which have come this season. He has scored seven goals but hasn’t found the net in this campaign.
Arsenal should consider swap deal with Newcastle United
Arsenal defender Ben White has found game time hard to come by this term. As a result, he is said to be a target for Everton, as per Football Insider. The Gunners should now try and use him as part of a swap deal plus cash to try and land Tonali.
White would be a shrewd addition for Newcastle if they got him. He is an experienced operator at the top level and would bolster their defensive department. In addition, he can play right-back or centre-back if needed which comes in handy.
The 28-year-old joined Arsenal back in 2021 and he has since played 178 matches for them in all competitions. However, he hasn’t been able to make the impact he would have hoped to over recent times and seen his opportunities dry up. In fact, he has only made seven outings this season under Arteta.
An exit would be a sensible option for him in the near future. He needs to be playing every week at this stage of his career and won’t want to be sitting on the bench. Newcastle would be a great destination for him and can offer him European football.
