Man United reportedly tried to hijack Liverpool’s move for Jeremy Jacquet over the weekend.
It has been a very quiet January window for Manchester United, as they are yet to make any signings to help Michael Carrick. It is understood that both the central midfielder and centre-back positions are both of interest for United, but as things stand, they are set to wait until the summer.
Seeing as Man United tried to hijack Liverpool’s deal for Jacquet, it seems they could be looking to add a centre-back before the end of the window, so who could they opt to target before the 7pm deadline?
Man United could sign Marcos Senesi instead
If United are looking to sign a centre-back on the cheap before the transfer deadline, they could decide to target Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi, who is out of contract in the summer, so could be available for a bargain deal.
Seeing as Senesi is yet to sign a contract extension at Bournemouth, the Cherries could be willing to sell him to ensure they get some form of return on the player, rather than letting him leave for free in the summer, much like what Crystal Palace did with Guehi to Manchester City.
Senesi is a proven Premier League talent and has been linked to several top clubs, including Chelsea, so it would be a shrewd piece of business for United if they want to add more depth and quality at the centre-back position for Carrick to try and get into the Champions League.
This season, Senesi has made 25 appearances in all competitions, providing four assists, and helping to fill the void left by Ilya Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen in the summer, after the duo joined Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
Senesi could replace Lisandro Martinez
It has been claimed that Martinez is viewed as the ideal centre-back target for Hansi Flick, as the Barcelona manager looks to boost his squad, and thus his chances of claiming a La Liga title this season, and potentially a Champions League trophy too.
If Man United were to sell Martinez, they could bring Senesi in at Old Trafford to replace him, as the 28-year-old Argentinian has also been linked to Barcelona, but he wouldn’t cost as much as Martinez, should United be willing to sell him to the Catalan side.
Senesi could also add some Premier League experience with Harry Maguire out of contract at the end of the season.
