Tyrell Malacia will leave Manchester United on a free transfer this summer after his hopes of sealing a deadline day move to Turkey were blocked by club chiefs. Malacia was ready to fly to Istanbul on Monday morning to seal a switch away from Old Trafford, having made his desire to leave the club five months before his contract expires clear.
The 26-year-old was hoping a deal could be agreed between a club showing interest from Turkey's Super Lig and United, with a loan move or a permanent switch believed to be on the table. He was ready to travel should that be the case.
But United didn't agree any deal and director of football Jason Wilcox told Malacia he would be staying at the club for the remainder of the season. Old Trafford sources say the hamstring injury picked up by Patrick Dorgu, who can play at left-back, has influenced the decision and that they never agreed a deal to allow Malacia to depart.
Malacia is now cover for Luke Shaw and while Noussair Mazraoui can also play left-back, he is primarily an option to step in for Diogo Dalot on the right. Wilcox told Malacia on Monday morning that he would be needed as part of the first-team squad for the rest of the season.
The decision has left Malacia disappointed, with the Netherlands international desperate to play first-team football to get his career back on track. He has played just two minutes for United this season and has been an unused substitute on 14 occasions.
Malacia returned from a 517-day absence from two serious knee injuries in November 2024 and then spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, where he started six times and made 12 appearances in total.
He was placed in Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' in the summer and was told he could leave the club, but ended up staying and was reintegrated to the first-team squad in October.
His chances of a January exit have now ended, and Malacia will see out his contract at United before leaving this summer.
