The West Ham captain spoke to the press following his side’s disappointing 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday evening.
The 29-year-old opened the scoring as he gave the Hammers the lead with only seven minutes played. His in-swinging cross managed to sneak all the way in, catching Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez by surprise. Despite leading 2-0 at the break, West Ham conceded three second-half goals, meaning they are now six points from safety.
His goal on Saturday was his eighth Premier League goal of the season. He has now made it to double figures in goal contributions in six straight seasons. As well as that, he is now only four Premier League goals away from overtaking Michail Antonio and becoming **West Ham**’s all-time leading Premier League goal scorer.
After the game, Bowen commented on how letting a two-goal lead slip can’t happen and that they will take positives from the defeat.
“Really disappointing. From our first half performance, we did everything right that you need to do away from home, without the ball, with the ball and got ourselves in a really good position. Then to concede three goals in the manner that we did and let the game slip away from us in the position that we’re in, we can't do that.
“It was just more of what we’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks [first half performance]. You get confidence from winning games, and certainly going forward, we’ve looked a lot better, without the ball as well.
“Before the game, we knew that we had to take a little bit of everything from the last three weeks, where we’ve won three in a row. So, that’s all we tried to do, and I think in the first half we showed that we frustrated them. We created our own opportunities. Even in the second half, we had a couple of opportunities as well.
“It’s the time where you need to keep the ball out of the back of your net. Especially, in the position that we’re in. We needed to do that, and we didn’t do it.
*“This is the Premier League, every team is going to have players to bring on. They’ve got squads that can change games. Ultimately, I think we didn’t do enough to keep the ball out of the back of the net.*
“I didn’t think we showed enough confidence with the ball that we did in the first half to really see the game out, kill the game, kill their momentum and then also for us to go forward and score more goals. There was more, there were definitely opportunities to go and score more on the counterattack. They flooded more forward, there was more space, but we didn’t do it well enough in the second half.
“We weren’t terrible today. We can take positives from the game. We were on the back of two really good results away from home, one at home, and we were 45 minutes where we looked really comfortable and strong. So, we have to take things from the game. Yes, we’re disappointed that we lost the game, especially in the manner in which we lost the game.
“In the situation we’re in, we can’t sit and dwell on it and be disappointed for too long. We have to take the positives that we got from today, and we’ve got to go to Burnley next week and win the game.”
