Crystal Palace now have work to do after a transfer was called off on deadline day.

Crystal Palace are expected to have a busy deadline day, but one deal could now be off. The Eagles have had a difficult month, and not just because of their quick slide down the Premier League table.

Club captain Marc Guehi was lured away to Manchester City months before he was expected to leave, while Oliver Glasner confirmed his departure at the end of the season soon after.

Palace were then hit by a request from Jean-Philippe Mateta to leave the club amid interest from Italy and in the Premier League. AC Milan have been closing in on a deal following an agreement over a £26million deal plus add-ons.

But in a fresh twist, it now seems as though the deal could be off. According to Sky Italy, Milan have decided to cancel the deal after further medical tests were held on Monday. It’s unclear whether the medical is the reason for the change of heart from Milan, who were also forced to revise their plans after Christopher Nkunku made it clear he would not be leaving the club.

Mateta could yet leave, with the same report claiming Juventus remain interested and could yet make a move after missing out on a number of striker targets this month. Juve had a bid for Mateta rejected earlier in the window, but at this stage, it’s expected the deal would be a loan with a potential obligation to buy.

What it all means for Larsen

Palace are closing in on a deal for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, and Sky Sports report that the Mateta deal being called off will not impact that deal. Larsen has completed his medical ahead of his £48million.

It’s reported that contracts have already been finalised and that there is no change in that situation. That will likely mean Palace will have to find a solution for Mateta to make sure they balance the books and avoid having both players at the club beyond January, which is more of a business concern than a personnel one.
