Deal off: Fabrizio Romano drops shock deadline day twist that could impact Leeds United

Leeds United look to have been beaten to the purchase of Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen by Crystal Palace, but there’s a key update that could throw that move into doubt again.

United’s January deadline days under the 49ers have not ever been eventful since they took over. There’s been a lot of optimism that the club would act, only to see the deadline pass without any movement.

The same looked to be in store today, as the club looked set to be priced out of signing a key striker to supplement Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s AC Milan move falls though – Could Crystal Palace pull plug on Jorgen Strand Larsen now?

Jorgen Strand Larsen is the main name that the second half of the January window has been focused on.

Despite putting down £40million, Leeds have since come up short for the Norway international. The reason being Crystal Palace have offered considerably more as a means to replace Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The Frenchman had asked to leave and was due to sign for AC Milan today. In turn, it would free Palace up to sign Strand larsen as a replacement.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the deal is off and Mateta won’t be heading to the San Siro. The reason for Mateta’s failed transfer is due to a long-standing knee injury. That issue stretches back to his France international duty in November.

🚨 BREAKING: Jean Philippe Mateta will NOT join AC Milan following double session of medical tests today.

Previously today, Romano had reported that Leeds target Strand Larsen’s move to Selhurst Park needed approval off the back of Mateta heading to Milan.

Now that the Palace striker is not joining the Serie A giants, it begs the question of what might happen to Strand Larsen.

Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett adds that Palace still want to sign Strand Larsen, and are expected to go ahead. Wolves have their replacement, Southampton’s Adam Armstrong, lined up too, but there remains uncertainty around each deal now.

With Mateta to #acmilan now dead, concerns that the striker-chain may collapse. At the moment, our sources saying #cpfc still want to sign Strand Larsen for £48m from #wwfc (has now completed medical) and Wolves still want to replace him with Adam Armstrong from #saintsfc. But….

If I were to guess, I’d still expect Strand Larsen’s deal to go through. That would leave Palace having to pick up the pieces financially in the off-season before July 1. In the same way Leeds would have had to.
