Jamaal Lascelles is leaving Newcastle United after almost 12 years at the club.
Signed in 2014, the 32-year-old is set to join Leicester City having enjoyed a roller-coaster ride from the Championship to Champions League. But he is not the only Toon veteran whose days at St James’ Park could be numbered - with three other stars entering the final months of their contracts.
As for incomings, the January transfer window looks as though it is going to pass by without a whisper of a Newcastle arrival. Toon chiefs are wary of PSR restrictions - the bane of the Saudi-backed era at St James’ Park.
All the noises on Tyneside appear to suggest that the powder will be kept dry until the summer. It has always been the case that the Magpies will only pounce if a “no-brainer” deal presents itself. That likelihood diminishes further with each passing day.
What the Newcastle hierarchy can control, however, is contracts. As it stands, four senior first-team stars - including Lascelles - are set to leave the Magpies this summer.
With the quartet well into their 30s, the St James’ Park shot-callers have big decisions to be made, especially given the cost of their potential replacements. Who would you keep? And who will follow Lascelles out of the exit door? NewcastleWorld has profiled the contracts list in full.
