Manchester United will cut ties with the player at the end of the current Premier League season

Parting company with Casemiro in the summer is the right decision for Manchester United, says Paul Merson. The ex-Arsenal man believes the Brazil international needs to move on from Old Trafford at the end of the season. It remains to be seen at this stage where he will end up next.

The Red Devils have started life under caretaker boss Michael Carrick in impressive fashion. They have won their last three games on the spin against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham. The North West outfit beat the latter 3-2 over the weekend.

Paul Merson on Manchester United midfielder Casemiro

Merson has delivered his verdict on Casemiro’s situation at United, as he spoke on Sky Sports on deadline day: "I think it is. He has done brilliantly well, playing with Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in there makes a difference. He's got to move on. He's 34 and before you know it he's 35. He's been a top player, he's had a lot of unworthy stick because he hasn't got the legs to play on his own in midfield if Fernandes pushes forward.

"(Kobbie) Mainoo has helped that a lot - common sense by Michael Carrick. But we're talking about the future of Man Utd and they are right to be doing what they're doing and letting him go."

As Merson has alluded to, Casemiro’s impending exit will pave the way for Kobbie Mainoo. He has enjoyed a new lease of life since Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim. His long-term future was previously up in the air due to a lack of game time.

Casemiro’s Manchester United story so far

United landed Casemiro back in 2022 to bolster their midfield department. The 33-year-old has since injected quality and experience into their options in the middle of the park. Prior to his move to England, he had spells with Sao Paulo and Real Madrid.

The Brazil international, who has 82 caps to his name, has since made 148 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and has chipped in with 22 goals, five of which have come this term. He has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his time with his current club. The veteran will be weighing up his next move in the game when this campaign ends.

United are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Tottenham Hotspur. They will be looking to keep their momentum going for as long as possible. Their upcoming opponents drew 2-2 with Manchester City last time out and fought back from 2-0 down.
