West Ham fail with three bids to sign 24-year-old South American from La Liga top-four hopefuls

Natan has been a key player for La Liga club Real Betis, and his performances have attracted the attention of the London club as well. West Ham United have failed with three different proposals for the defender.

According to a report from Spanish outlet [ABC](https://www.abc.es/deportes/alfinaldelapalmera/fichajes-betis/betis-rechaza-tres-millonarias-ofertas-west-ham-20260202122127-nts.html?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abc.es%2Fdeportes%2Falfinaldelapalmera%2Ffichajes-betis%2Fbetis-rechaza-tres-millonarias-ofertas-west-ham-20260202122127-nts.html%3Fref%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.abc.es%2Fdeportes%2Falfinaldelapalmera%2Ffichajes-betis%2Fbetis-rechaza-tres-millonarias-ofertas-west-ham-20260202122127-nts.html), West Ham offered €3 million up front to sign the South American centre-back in the winter transfer window. The proposal included a compulsory purchase clause of €33 million in the summer. However, Betis rejected the offer.

West Ham then raised the initial fee to €5 million, with a further €31 million payable in July. However, they were not able to convince the Spanish club to sell Natan. The Hammers returned with a third and final bid of €6 million now, €28 million for next summer, and 15% of any future sale. Betis have rejected it, and it remains to be seen whether West Ham decide to move on to other targets.

West Ham need a quality defender

--------------------------------

West Ham United need to improve their defensive performance if they want to survive in the top flight. The East London outfit have endured a disappointing season so far, and they are fighting for survival in the Premier League.

A club of their stature should be doing a lot better. They need to tighten up at the back to do well in the second half of the campaign. The 24-year-old Brazilian defender would have been a quality acquisition for them. However, they have failed with multiple offers to sign Natan, and it makes sense for them to move on now.

With very little time left in the winter transfer window, it will be interesting to see if the East London club can identify an alternative. They have improved their attacking unit by signing two strikers in recent weeks.

West Ham need to improve their defensive unit as well, and they have shown interest in other centre-backs, [including Axel Disasi](https://thehardtackle.com/transfer-news/2026/02/02/axel-disasi-set-to-join-west-ham-united-as-deal-agreed/). If they can sign a quality central defender before the window closes, they could do really well during the second half of the campaign.
