Manchester United in advanced talks to loan 2006-born prodigy to lower league English club

Swindon Town are close to signing Manchester United winger and Under-21 regular James Scanlon on loan for the remainder of the season.

According to The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson, Swindon Town are closing in on a loan deal for Manchester United’s Under-21 winger James Scanlon. The young attacker is eager to make the step up to senior football and away from the youth teams at Carrington, with the League Two outfit ready to take him until the remainder of the season.

League Two football may not have been on James Scanlon’s mind when he thought about senior football, although it is a first step in the right direction. The 2006-born prodigy, who is a Under-21 regular at Manchester United, had been itching for senior-level football, and now he is close to joining League Two.

Over there, Swindon Town are close to finding an agreement with Manchester United over a loan deal for the 2006-born prodigy until the remainder of the season. This move will allow the League Two promotion chasers a boost to their attacking setup while Manchester United can help Scanlon with first-team action.

Scanlon has never featured for the Manchester United first team, but during Erik ten Hag’s reign, he did train multiple times with the senior squad. At the end of the 2023/24 season, Scanlon signed on professional terms and was called up once to the first team squad for a Europa League game the following season.

Meanwhile, he could be thrust straight into senior action at Swindon Town, as Manchester United will keep a close eye on his progress. The Gibraltar international will hope to develop his game with ample exposure to senior-level English football, albeit with the League Two promotion chasers.

Manchester United to be active on deadline day?

Manchester United are not anticipating any new arrivals for the senior squad, but they are focused on finding solutions for some of their younger players. As Scanlon closes in on a loan move to Swindon Town, fellow Under-21 star Jacob Devaney is about to join St. Mirren on loan.

Meanwhile, Manchester united might have blocked an exit for Tyrell Malacia to a Turkish club, which indicates that Michael Carrick may not want to disrupt his current first-team squad. Beyond that, there might not be a new signing as things stand, but things always change late in the window.
