Where would Nilson Angulo rank among Sunderland's most expensive incoming transfers?
Sunderland are set to make big changes in the wings, with Nilson Angulo set to arrive as a replacement for Simon Adingra.
Adingra only arrived on Wearside in the summer from Brighton for £21million, but has failed to have the desired impact, registering just one goal in 15 appearances for the club across all competitions. The Ivorian is now on the verge of sealing a shock loan move to French side Monaco, with the Black Cats quickly lining up Anderlecht’s Angulo as a replacement, according to Fabrizio Romano.
BBC Sport report that Sunderland will pay £17.5m for the 12-time Ecuador international, who has notched seven goals and five assists in 30 appearances across all competitions for Belgian giants Anderlecht this season, helping the 34-time champions sit fourth in the Pro League. But where would that place Angulo among Sunderland’s record signings, should the deal go through?

Sunderland’s record transfers: Where does Nilson Angulo fit in?
Habib Diarra - £30m
Simon Adingra - £21m
Chemsdine Talbi - £19.5m
Enzo Le Fee - £19m
Noah Sadiki, Nilson Angulo - £17.5m
Didier N’Dong - £13.8m
Asamoah Gyan - £13m
Steven Fletcher, Connor Wickham - £12m
Jack Rodwell, Adam Johnson, Darren Bent, Fabio Borini - £10m
Ricardo Alvarez, Wahbi Khazri, Craig Gordon - £9m
£17.5m is the same fee Sunderland paid for Noah Sadiki in the summer, with the midfielder proving a huge success at the Stadium of Light so far. It would put Angulo level with Sadiki as the the fifth-most expensive transfer in the club’s history, just ahead of the likes of Didier N’Dong (£13.8m), Asamoah Gyan (£13m) and Steven Fletcher (£12m), who all experienced varying levels of success in the North East.
The four players above Sadiki and, hopefully, Angulo are Enzo Le Fee (£19m), Chemsdine Talbi (£19.5m), the departing Adingra (£21m) and Habib Diarra (£30m), meaning the six most expensive players in Sunderland history will have been signed this season, since their promotion back to the Premier League. £17.5m would represent a huge profit for Anderlecht on a player they paid just £1.6m to sign from LDU Quito in Angulo’s native Ecuador in 2022.
Sunderland will hope to have Angulo available for Saturday’s trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal, which comes off the back of their home tie with relegation-threatened Burnley on Monday night, kicking off just an hour after the transfer deadline.
