Sunderland confirm Adil Aouchiche departure - why it helps Nilson Alungo deal explained

Sunderland are concluding some key business at the end of the transfer window

Adil Aouchiche has completed a permanent exit from Sunderland - potentially paving the way for the Black Cats to complete a deal for Ecuador international Nilson Angulo.

Aouchiche has been a crucial part of a complicated transfer chain on deadline day, having previously taken up one of the club’s six international loan slots at Scottish side Aberdeen. He has now joined Bundesliga 2 side Schalke on a permanent deal, meaning that Simon Adingra’s initial loan move to Ligue 1 side Monaco can now progress. Adingra is expected to join the French side on loan until the end of the campaign, with Sunderland banking an initial seven-figure loan fee. Monaco will hold the option to sign him permanently in the summer for a fee of around £15 million, which if triggered would mean Sunderland essentially recoup the majority of their initial investment.

If Adingra does depart, then Sunderland will push ahead to conclude a deal for Anderlecht winger Angulo. The Black Cats have agreed an initial £15 million fee with the Belgian Pro League club, who will take Adingra’s place in the squad. It remains to be seen if the deals have been concluded in time - the deadline was 7pm but teams can earn an extra hour to conclude their business if they submit a deal sheet in time.

Reacting to Adil Aouchiche’s departure, Kristjaan Speakman said: “Loan opportunities are beneficial in the short term, but moving forward, we felt Adil needed a project with a longer-term view. He possesses many qualities and is extremely hard-working, so this opportunity at a prestigious Club like FC Schalke 04 is fully deserved. We thank him for his contribution to our Club and wish him well for the future.”
