Swindon add Manchester United winger to bolster attacking options

As part of a busy transfer deadline day, Swindon have brought in a promising attacker in Scanlon to further boost their options in attacking areas.

Swindon managed to fend off interest from other sides in the EFL and across Europe to secure his services.

Predominantly used as a left winger, Scalon is a versatile attacker who can play from the right and behind the striker, and Ian Holloway expects him to be a useful option in his “stack and rack” attacking rotation.

With Michael Olakigbe having established himself as a threat down the right, Swindon have plenty of options through the middle, and believe that Scanlon can offer a similar ability down the left if they are playing with natural wide men.

He joins an attacking group that also features League Two top goalscorer Aaron Drinan, Ollie Palmer, Fletcher Holman, and Billy Bodin.

Whilst he is yet to make a senior appearance at Old Trafford, he has been included with the first team on their pre-season tour in 2024 and was named on the bench in a UEFA Europa League clash with Real Sociedad on their run to the final last season.

The youngster also has 20 caps for the Gibraltar national team, scoring twice, once against Liechtenstein and once against the Faroe Islands.

The 19-year-old and his younger brother, Luca, are both full internationals for Gibraltar, with Luca in the academy at Burnley.

In his appearances in Premier League Two this season, Scanlon ranks in the top 30 per cent of wingers for assists, chances created, successful crosses, and successful dribbles, per FotMob, demonstrating his capability as a dynamic attacking presence down the left wing.

He has also played for United’s under-21s in the Vertu Trophy and National League Cup this season, which, along with his endeavours in international football, have helped to acclimatise him to senior football.

The 19-year-old will already be familiar with the Nigel Eady County Ground, having been in the Manchester United under-18s squad that lost to Swindon in the FA Youth Cup in 2024.
