Aberdeen have confirmed the departure of Adil Aouchiche ahead of the midfielder's permanent exit from Sunderland.

The Frenchman joined the Dons on a season-long loan from the Premier League side, scoring three times in 16 outings for the Granite City outfit.

However, the Black Cats have opted to recall the midfielder early ahead of a permanent move to Germany to join Bundesliga 2 side Schlake.

Commenting on his time at the Dons, Adil told the club website: "I’d like to thank all the people working for this club, my teammates and of course all the fans.

"This club is huge and the fans deserve happy days. They are really important for the players and I wish Aberdeen all the best for the future."

The former PSG midfielder made his Dons debut against back in August against Hearts in the Premiership opener, and went on to impress fans with a brace against Dundee.

However, since Jimmy Thelin's exit, his game time has been limited, and sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel has admitted his disappointment at seeing the 23-year-old depart.

He said: "While we are disappointed to see Adil depart, we respect the decision of his parent club to exercise their recall option.
