Manchester United left it until the final moments but confirmed a loan deal for youngster James Scanlon to Swindon Town. The announcement came through at 18.59 on the club's website, just moments before the 7pm transfer deadline.

The Red Devils didn't make any signings during January but witnessed several deals materialise on deadline day. Ethan Wheatley moved to Bradford, having returned from Northampton earlier this month.

Gabriele Biancheri secured a move to Rotherham until the end of the season, whilst Jacob Devaney is poised to join St Mirren in Scotland, where the deadline falls later. Tyrell Malacia was not allowed to make an exit from the club and will now see out his contract at Old Trafford.

There was no such trouble for Scanlon, however, who makes his first foray into first-team football as he embarks on his first loan away from United.

The club said in their statement: "Manchester United forward James Scanlon has secured a first loan move of his career. The 19-year-old is joining League Two side Swindon Town for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

"Ian Holloway's side are challenging for promotion to League One and have a midweek game away to Harrogate Town next on their agenda.

"Scanlon was outstanding in a recent Premier League International Cup game against Sporting, scoring a superb hat-trick against the Lisbon side.

"He also found the net earlier in the competition, against Athletic Club, and in a National League Cup tie at Rochdale in October.

"After doing well for our Under-21s, the next step will be to experience senior league football with the Robins.

"However, the teenager has already accrued valuable experience at international level. The Academy graduate has amassed 20 caps for Gibraltar, scoring twice, and this should stand him in good stead for what lies ahead.

"Best of luck to James for the rest of the season!".
