Joel Piroe and £15.6m Leeds United flop – three biggest winners at Leeds from deadline day

Leeds United

Leeds United fans will be frustrated that the team ended the January transfer window this way. There were a lot of expectations from the Whites in the middle of the month, but they failed to deliver once again.

A team that needed serious reinforcements for the rest of the season did not get what they requested for. Now, there is a huge battle till the end of the campaign, and fans will hope this current group will be good enough to face it.

In this window, some players hugely benefited from failed moves and the lack of transfer activity. At The Leeds Press, we pick out the winners of this January transfer window.

Joel Piroe handed lifeline after 49ers blunder

Leeds United set out to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen; they made an official enquiry and even had a bid rejected. But because Wolves held out for too much, the Whites decided a deal was not feasible and walked away from the table. Crystal Palace stepped up and swooped in to sign the Norwegian striker. Missing out on Strand Larsen will be to the benefit of Joel Piroe, who was reportedly on the brink of an exit to facilitate the arrival of a new striker. For the mean time, Piroe gets to be in the team for the rest of the season and could get some chances in the first team.

Jaka Bijol will keep his place at Leeds United

The Slovenian defender will be another first team player who will be overjoyed that a major signing did not arrive this month. Slowly making his way into the starting lineup has been a good path for Bijol. He continues to impress in the team, and has shaken off the tag he had earlier in the season when he was not at his sharpest. Bijol will now continue to fight for his place in the heart of the defence alongside Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk.

Lucas Perri has a chance to reclaim his spot as number one

Lucas Perri for one will be excited that Leeds did not go out and get a new goalkeeper this month. After being dropped for his recent errors, many urged the Whites to try the loan market. But no new shot stopper has come through the doors, and with Karl Darlow being at fault for some of the goals conceded this past weekend, the Brazilian could find himself reinstated as Leeds number one soon.
