Kai Andrews on his Hibs debut

Kai Andrews has ambitions to play in the Premier League and become a regular for Wales. And he’s convinced that Hibs is the perfect club to help him achieve it.

The 19-year-old midfielder moved to Easter Road on loan from Coventry City and was given a baptism of fire for his debut against Rangers on Sunday.

Andrews was thrown on by boss David Gray after just 10 minutes, in place of injured Miguel Chaiwa.

The teenager was outstanding for the Hibees as they fought out a 0-0 draw with the Ibrox side.

Andrews previously had a stint at Motherwell, which influenced his decision to head north again. He’s highly-rated by Coventry manager Frank Lampard who sanctioned the move to Edinburgh. And the Sky Blues are gunning for promotion to England’s top flight this term.

He’s already been given his first full cap by Welsh gaffer Craig Bellamy against Canada in September. Andrews believes he can reach the top and is adamant this switch to Hibs can provide a platform to get there.

He said: “I only spoke to the gaffer here about a week ago so the move came around pretty fast. I headed up here last week and had Rangers for my first game.

“So it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve been struggling to find minutes at Coventry and that’s the biggest reason why I’ve decided to come here.

“This move gives me the chance to develop as a player. Coventry have had a brilliant start to the season. They’re going through a rough patch just now but with the quality they have, they can definitely get to the Premier League.

“That’s something I’m really looking forward to going back to. But consistent minutes is what I need. And the biggest thing is having a platform to play, express myself and show up well.

“The eyes of the national team will also be looking at me so if I can keep putting in good performances, I can definitely push myself into that squad.”

While Andrews was in the Scottish Premiership last time, he shone for Motherwell in a 2-1 victory over Rangers at Ibrox in March last year.

He excelled against Danny Rohl’s side on Sunday and already feels settled at Hibs. He said: “That was one of my breakout games when I was at Motherwell.

“So to get the chance to play against them again on Sunday was a privilege. Being up in Scotland before definitely influenced my decision to come here.

“I had a chat with the gaffer at Coventry and then when I spoke to the gaffer here, it was such a good club - and it was also about how he wants to play. The experience of playing in Scotland is definitely the right move for me just now and something I can build on.

“I started off well at Motherwell then had a bit of a rocky time when the manager left and I was struggling to find minutes. But I got an opportunity in the Rangers game which led to me getting my first international call-up.

“So this is a really good chance for me to come up here and do it again.

“I feel really comfortable coming into this team. The players have welcomed me and I’m familiar with the set-up because of how the gaffer explained it to me.”

Andrews enjoyed his first taste of Easter Road at the weekend and felt Hibs deserved to take all three points. Now, he can’t wait to sample an Edinburgh derby against Hearts on February 10.

He said: “I wasn’t expecting to come into the game on Sunday so early. But it was a brilliant experience to play in front of the fans. It was a dream debut for me.

“We could have won it, definitely. We had some really good chances. But we’re happy with the point and our performance.

“There’s a lot of big games coming up. Obviously we’ve got the derby so that’s a game that I’m really looking forward to.

“Hopefully I can get the opportunity to play and I want to give myself the best chance to be in the squad for those games.”
