Ruben Amorim’s fate as Man Utd head coach was sealed last month and the 41-year-old former Sporting CP manager was finally axed by the Red Devils.

The outspoken former United manager saw his relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos regime fall apart in the weeks leading to his sacking from his managerial role.

Michael Carrick was installed as interim head coach after Amorim’s dismissal as Man Utd manager and the Red Devils legend will see out the remainder of the season.

Manchester United have enjoyed a major manager bounce under interim head coach Michael Carrick, who has won his first three Premier League matches in charge.

Carrick’s results so far have included huge performances against Premier League title-challenging sides Manchester City and Arsenal since his return to Old Trafford.

A key – and immediate – decision from the 44-year-old United legend came with deploying Bruno Fernandes back in a more advanced position on the pitch.

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards highlighted the significance of Bruno Fernandes being effectively used in a No 10 role under Carrick compared with Ruben Amorim.

“He’s top, top, top player,” he said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“The manager’s played him in the right position, and he’s shining. And even when United weren’t doing great, he always stepped up with something, you know.

“I know we’ve talked about him being petulant with his swinging of the arms, and it’s not, especially as a young player coming into the squad, you know, sometimes he makes a pass, he’s made a mistake and he’s got his hands up and he’s passionate and I get all that stuff.

“But what that does, Gaz [Gary Lineker], it brings attention to somebody else because he can get away with it because he’s so good. That’s what, you know.”

Michael Carrick’s handling of Bruno Fernandes must be set in stone for the next Man Utd manager after Ruben Amorim

Whether or not Carrick defies the odds and ends up becoming the next permanent Man Utd manager after Amorim still remains to be seen in 2026.

However, one thing that the United legend has established is that Amorim’s successor must be ready to play Bruno Fernandes in the No 10 role in the team.

Should Manchester United keep Bruno Fernandes this summer, or is the time right to sell for big money?

Amorim already shot himself in the foot by hindering Fernandes’ influence after playing the 31-year-old Man Utd captain in the two-man pivot earlier this season.

Not only did Fernandes look deeply out of place alongside Casemiro within the deep midfield area, but the knock-on effect cost Kobbie Mainoo his place in the starting XI.

Man Utd are keen for Fernandes to commit his future to the Premier League club and the Red Devils are reportedly ready to trigger his 12-month extension clause.

Considering Fernandes’ influence, consistency and impact since his arrival, it looks even more foolish for the next United manager to repeat Amorim’s mistakes.
