Four incomings as Semenyo departed: Cherries transfer window assessed

Led by head of football operations Tiago Pinto and technical director Simon Francis, Bournemouth brought in four players in the winter market.

They were Fraser Forster on a six-month deal, Alex Toth for £10.4million plus bonuses, Christos Mandas on loan from Lazio and Rayan for £24.7m plus bonuses.

There was one significant departure in Antoine Semenyo, who headed to Manchester City for £62.5m, while Julian Araujo headed on loan to Celtic and Romain Faivre returned from Saudi Arabia and headed off to Auxerre, also on loan.

Toth and Rayan both look exciting signings.

They are both young, at 20 and 19 respectively, and have looked bright in short cameos so far.

Rayan in particular impressed against Wolves, picking up an assist in his first appearance off the bench in the Premier League.

Mandas will push Djordje Petrovic for the goalkeeper spot, while Forster was signed very much as an emergency signing at the start of the month after Will Dennis picked up an injury.

Andoni Iraola was clear in the early stages of the window that he wanted four signings to replace the three long-term injuries of Justin Kluivert, Ben Gannon-Doak and Tyler Adams, and Semenyo.

While those four were not replace – only two were, really, in Adams and Semenyo – recent form and the return of injured players, including Adams, meant the club stuck with the squad they have and had a quiet deadline day.

Reports suggested a loan move for Fran Garcia was turned down by Real Madrid.

A left back would have been a handy boost for some depth, with Adrien Truffert the only out-and-out left sided defender that is fit with a ‘bad’ injury to Julio Soler.

But that didn’t come off, and left back isn’t the only position where an additional signing could have been a positive, with Iraola saying with a week to go that they would look to bring in more than one winger.

That, too, didn’t happen, with the Cherries interested in Luis Henrique from Inter Milan.

But David Brooks is set to return from injury shortly, and Marcus Tavernier and Tyler Adams are not far away too.

That will bolster the squad, with 14 games remaining of the season.

Another centre back could have been handy, with Marcos Senesi’s contract out in the summer and reports suggesting he had turned down renewal offers.

A new arrival could have bedded in over the next part of the season, but that was not desperate, particularly with Senesi and James Hill performing well of late.

That central defender could have also added some more height to the Cherries back line, with the team struggling at the back and at set pieces in particular, although improvements have been made recently.

But all in all, with players coming back into the side and the new arrivals, the Cherries did not pull off any last-minute deals and settled with the squad assembled before the victory at Wolves.
