Sunderland boss reacts to Nilson Angulo swoop and issues Lutsharel Geertruida message

Sunderland finalised their squad for the rest of the campaign on a busy transfer deadline day

Régis Le Bris believes Nilson Angulo has all the attributes required to be a success at Sunderland following his deadline-day move from Anderlecht.

Sunderland’s decision to allow Simon Adingra to go on loan to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco paved the way for Angulo’s arrival, with the Black Cats paying an initial fee believed to be in the region of £15 million for his signature. The Ecuador international will link up with his team mates on Wearside later this week.

“I know him because we have worked with the recruitment structure on his profile,” Le Bris said.

“I think he is a strong, powerful tall winger with strong physical ability. He has this South American style of play as well, with the ability to be creative. He likes the one-v-one situations, he has this character. After that, he will probably need time to connect with his team-mates and the league, but you never know, sometimes it is really quick, sometimes it takes time. But we are really happy to have him.”

Le Bris also said he has no concerns over Lutsharel Geertruida’s position in the squad after Liverpool’s move to take over his loan from RB Leipzig ahead of the window. Sunderland ultimately blocked the move due to the lack of an available replacement and Le Bris said the versatile defender had accepted the decision.

“We’ve had many conversations,” Le Bris said.

“I think we were honest and really well connected all the way through. When the deadline was finished and over, he accepted the decision. I think he is ready to play for Sunderland. I don’t have any worries about him being okay from now on.”

Kristjaan Speakman explains why Sunderland signed Nilson Angulo

“Nilson is an incredibly exciting prospect, and we are delighted he’s chosen to join Sunderland,” Speakman said.

“A quick and creative wide player, he excels in all the core actions required to impact the final third, and he arrives ambitious to make an impression. He’s young but has already had many interesting experiences as a senior player domestically, on the European stage, and internationally with Ecuador. We are delighted to have completed this signing and look forward to welcoming Nilson to Wearside.”
