Despite sitting 11 points adrift of safety, the Clarets brought in just one player last month in the form of James Ward-Prowse from West Ham.

Speaking on Thursday, Parker re-affirmed that Burnley were active in the market and were looking to make more additions – but nothing materialised on a deathly quiet transfer deadline day.

In response, the Clarets boss said: “It's a moment where a window opens and there's opportunities there, [but] the facts are really, if you're doing mad things and crazy things, something has absolutely gone wrong at the beginning of the season and that's something we'll have to reflect on in terms of that window.

“Like I've said, there's many reasons why that didn't happen, whether that's financial in terms of players' demands, whether that is players going elsewhere rather than us, but I didn't want to bring anyone in here that wasn't going to improve us and the way it turned out, it's been quiet but that's the way it is.”

When asked to expand what he meant by “crazy things”, Parker continued: “As in, you don't want to be in January having to recruit five or six players.

“You really want to be doing your work in the summer with an eight-week, nine-week window with a lot of planning, what goes ahead.

“January transfer windows are just…a player will come up this morning and it's whether you want to go and sign that player. There's no real due diligence, you can't really look into it in a real deep way because things move so quickly in a four-week period.

“So, like I said, like always, we'll reflect at the end of this season and see how we could maybe have changed things, what we did well, what we've done bad and we'll go from there really.”
