David Ornstein sheds more light on why Crystal Palace actually pulled out of move for Dwight…

There was a frantic end to the transfer window at Everton last night, as Dwight McNeil’s move to Crystal Palace collapsed.

Palace lodged a very late bid for McNeil, thought to be in the region of £20 million.

With the club signing George, the Toffees had decided they would accept that bid from Palace.

The clubs got a deal sheet as the deadline passed, but in the end, McNeil’s move to Selhurst Park fell through.

It was reported that in Everton’s view, Palace were responsible for the move collapsing.

And now, journalist David Ornstein has shared a key detail behind Palace’s decision to back away.

Deadline day is now done… what’s your thoughts, Toffees? 😬

Why Crystal Palace pulled out of signing Dwight McNeil

It was certainly a dramatic end to the window last night.

But McNeil will now be staying at Everton until the end of the season.

Late last night, David Ornstein shed some more light on why Palace chose to walk away from the McNeil deal.

And it’s because they changed the conditions of the deal following their failure to sell Jean-Philippe Mateta.

He wrote on X: “Dwight McNeil move from Everton to Crystal Palace off. Deal sheet submitted in time + 26yo #EFC winger completed medical.

“But after Mateta sale collapsed #CPFC changed terms from £20m purchase to loan with buy obligation & then pulled out.”

A tough break for McNeil

Last night’s events have probably left McNeil’s head in a spin.

The winger had even completed a medical ahead of joining Palace, and he must have thought he was on his way.

But it hasn’t come off, and now he’ll be back out on the training pitches at Everton gearing up for the next game with Fulham.

What are you now expecting from Dwight McNeil for the remainder of the season? 😫

This could only happen to Everton 😡

One does feel a bit sorry for him, because he was clearly ready to go – and Everton were set to make a very good sale in terms of the price.

Seemingly Palace weren’t ready to spend the cash now after failing to secure funds for Mateta.

Hopefully, McNeil is able to put the setback behind him and deliver on the pitch for Everton.
