The dust has settled on a rather underwhelming January transfer window, during which Manchester United, like numerous other Premier League clubs, accomplished little in terms of dealings. It's been a turbulent month at Old Trafford for various reasons, though.

Ruben Amorim was shown the door at the beginning of January, with Michael Carrick taking over as caretaker manager for the rest of the campaign. Whilst many supporters were keen to see whether the 44-year-old would delve into the winter market for additions, Carrick instead focused entirely on delivering results on the field and reversing fortunes for the Red Devils.

Carrick presided over a convincing 2-0 victory against Manchester City in his opening fixture as boss, before beating Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium the following week. A battling 3-2 triumph over Fulham followed on Sunday afternoon, as Carrick achieved a perfect three wins from three matches.

Whilst no senior squad transfers were finalised on Monday evening, several deals involving youth players were completed - meanwhile reports surfaced of discontent from one first-team star following Jason Wilcox's reported intervention to prevent a departure from Manchester United.

Here, the Daily Star Sport looks at the biggest stories of the transfer window from Manchester United.

Tyrell Malacia fuming with Jason Wilcox

Tyrell Malacia was left furious with Manchester United on Monday afternoon, as Wilcox reportedly prevented a deadline day switch to Turkey just as the full-back was preparing to board his flight. The 26-year-old has been sidelined by the Red Devils this term, managing only one Premier League outing in the 2025/26 campaign.

Despite the reports, it's said no agreement or travel arrangements were finalised between the player and the club in recent weeks. The Dutch defender might still feature in Michael Carrick's plans for the remainder of the season, given United's position on utilising him may have shifted following Patrick Dorgu's recent setback.

Dorgu sustained an injury during United's 3-2 triumph over Arsenal last month, with reports indicating he could be sidelined for as long as 10 weeks.

Permanent departures for three stars

Sam Mather

Sam Mather sealed a permanent move to Kayserispor on January 17, having been with United since he was seven years old. After successful loan stints at Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers, the 21-year-old winger made the switch to the Turkish Super Lig halfway through the window on a free transfer.

However, his contract includes a clause that entitles United to a 20 per cent share of any future sale. Meanwhile, Joe Hugill left the Red Devils for an undisclosed fee, signing with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

The 22-year-old striker arrived at Old Trafford in 2020 but failed to break into the first team, instead gaining experience through loan spells at Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic, Carlisle United and Barnet. Defender Rhys Bennett also moved to Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee, after spending the 2024/25 season with the club.

In addition, five more players secured loan deals. Harry Amass joined Norwich City for the remainder of the season, only to suffer a 'serious' injury in training. The 18-year-old left-back previously had a loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday.

Defensive midfielder Toby Collyer, 22, switched from West Bromwich Albion to Hull City for the rest of the season, while Ethan Wheatley headed to Bradford City on loan for the remainder of 2025/26. The 20-year-old striker has previously spent time on loan at Northampton Town.

Just one minute before Monday's 7pm deadline, James Scanlon secured a loan move to Swindon Town for the rest of the campaign. The 19-year-old versatile attacking midfielder will get his first experience of competitive senior football with the Robins.

Gabriele Biancheri also sealed his first loan departure from United. The 19-year-old striker has moved to Rotherham until the summer. While 18-year-old midfielder Sekou Kone's loan spell to INEOS-owned Lausanne-Sport was confirmed hours after the Premier League transfer window closed.
