Sunderland arrival breaks silence with nine-word Instagram message to fans after transfer move

New Sunderland signing Melker Ellborg thanked supporters for their reception after being introduced to the Stadium of Light crowd

New Sunderland signing Melker Ellborg offered supporters an early glimpse of his enthusiasm for life on Wearside after posting a short message to fans on Instagram following his introduction at the Stadium of Light.

Ellborg was brought out onto the pitch ahead of kick-off against Burnley to be presented to the home crowd, acknowledging all four stands as he soaked in his first taste of the Stadium of Light atmosphere. Shortly afterwards, the 22-year-old shared a message online thanking supporters for their reception.

Posting an image from the pitch, Ellborg wrote: “Thank you for the warm welcome. What a start.” The Black Cats went on to defeat the Clarerts 3-0 at the Stadium of Light to move up to 36 points in the Premier League. Sunderland completed the signing of Ellborg from Malmö FF during the transfer window, subject to international clearance, with the goalkeeper arriving for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £3million. He has signed a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light running until the summer of 2030.

Ellborg enjoyed a breakthrough 2025 campaign in Sweden, keeping five clean sheets in seven league appearances and gaining valuable European experience with Malmö in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. His development pathway has been gradual but consistent, having begun his career at IFK Berga before joining Malmö ahead of the 2021 season. Loan spells with IFK Malmö, Ariana FC and Trelleborgs FF followed, helping him establish himself at senior level.

Speaking after completing his move, Ellborg said: “It feels amazing to have signed for this Club. The past few days have been enjoyable, from learning about the interest, getting to know the Club and the people, and finalising the move. The Club has had an excellent season so far, and I’m incredibly happy to be part of this journey. I’m aware of Sunderland’s history, and it means a lot to be part of something with such a rich tradition. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at the Stadium of Light on Monday and hopefully playing in front of the fans soon.”

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: “Melker has enjoyed a very positive season in Sweden, breaking into the starting XI and producing standout performances in the Allsvenskan and the Europa League. Physically strong, he has the athleticism of a modern goalkeeper and is calm and composed in possession. Melker has a lot of potential, and we believe he is ready to take this step and join our squad. We are very much looking forward to working with him.”
