‘Ruined everything’ – Frustration over failure to sign Aston Villa man on deadline day

Aston Villa’s Kosta Nedeljković has been on loan at RB Leipzig since February 2025.

The Serbia international has played just five league matches this season and hasn’t featured for over a month. His situation at the Bundesliga side had convinced Fiorentina to sign him.

On Monday, we covered claims from Germany that Aston Villa were in talks with Leipzig to cancel his loan stay. The 20-year-old, for his part, was keen on moving to Italy.

Later that day, journalist Philipp Hinze reported the right-back has reached an agreement with the Serie A side to join them on loan until the end of this season. He didn’t end up joining La Viola on deadline day.

TuttoMercatoWeb state the three-way deal involving Fiorentina, the German club and Unai Emery’s side ‘fell through in the final hour’.

According to TMW, the Italian club didn’t have sufficient time to submit the paperwork related to this operation before the window closed yesterday.

Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, however, has dismissed TMW’s suggestion. The deadline to submit the document was 8pm [local time] on Monday.

Di Marzio now claims the Aston Villa owned player had signed the contract minutes before deadline. The move didn’t go through because of the Bundesliga side, who ‘ruined everything’ for Fiorentina.

He adds this is an indication that Leipzig were never in favour of letting him leave. The journalist’s latest claim has been denied by the German press.

According to Sky Deutschland, Leipzig are not at fault for the youngster’s failure to join Fiorentina.

It’s claimed the loan transfer collapsed because La Viola couldn’t agree terms with the Villans.

There are different versions, likely provided by various sources. It’s probably too early to figure out what went wrong unless there’s an official confirmation.

Both Fiorentina and Nedeljković would be frustrated over the failed move.
