Casemiro will leave Man United at the end of the season, when his contract at the club expires.

Man United had a very quiet transfer window, and it is understood that they did this to ensure they can spend big in the summer instead. Whether Michael Carrick is in charge or not, the new manager will need backing in the transfer market, especially in midfield.

Man United are interested in Club Brugge star

In terms of a new target emerging, former Inter Milan midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic is one to keep an eye on, as reports claim the Red Devils are keen on the 20-year-old. The Club Brugge midfielder is known to be one of the most promising players in the Champions League, and could be a real world-class star for the future.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, both Man United and Spurs are expected to make a move for Stankovic in the summer. It isn’t understood whether Brugge will be willing to sell him, but if there is significant Premier League interest, then it wouldn’t be a surprise.

The former Inter midfielder has made 36 appearances for Brugge this season, scoring seven goals and four assists. He is a defensive midfielder, but also a deep-lying playmaker, so could help to win the ball back, but then provide attacking returns too, much like Casemiro has done in recent weeks under Carrick.

Stankovic has an estimated market value of just £13m; however, seeing as he has massive potential, Club Brugge are likely to demand a much higher fee for the Serbian international.

Which other midfielders could United target in the summer?

Other than the obvious choices of Baleba and Anderson, there is another Premier League midfielder who was linked with United for a potential move in January. Wolves’ Joao Gomes ended up staying at Molineux, despite interest from Man United and Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian midfielder is expected to cost around £40m, but seeing as Wolves are expected to get relegated, his price could drop in the summer, assuming he becomes a Championship player. Waiting until the summer is the right move for Gomes, as United could get a bargain deal for the 24-year-old.

In terms of other Premier League names, Man United are linked to Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki, although they did make enquiries during the January window, and these were shut down by the Black Cats almost instantly, so even in summer, it could be tough for United to sign Sadiki.
