Leeds United target joins rival as Sunderland and Liverpool make transfer decisions

A roundup of the latest Premier League deals to take place on transfer deadline day.

The Whites were looking to boost their attacking ranks as they look to preserve their top flight status and their main target was Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norway striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. However, after seeing an initial bid believed to be worth around £35m rejected by Wolves, it was Crystal Palace that stole a march on Leeds and eventually concluded a £48m deal to land the striker on the final day of the window.

After wrapping up the deal, Eagles chairman Steve Parish told the club website: “We’re delighted that Jørgen has chosen to continue his impressive journey with us and look forward to seeing him in action at Selhurst Park. I’m sure he will prove himself a valuable asset for years to come.”

Strand Larsen added: "I'm really excited to come to Crystal Palace. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time now. I'm here to bring energy and goals, and to try to do my best for the club."

It wasn’t all positive news for Palace on transfer deadline day as a last-minute deal for Everton winger Dwight McNeil collapsed. The former Burnley man appeared to be on his way to Selhurst Park after the two clubs agreed an initial loan deal with an obligation for a £20m permanent move in the summer. Despite receiving two additional hours to conclude the move after submitting a deal sheet to the Premier League, Palace could not conclude the deal and McNeil will remain an Everton player for the rest of the season.

The winger gave an insight into his mindset in a reply to an emotional social media post from his partner as he said: “Whilst even now, I’m still left in the dark. What I do know and have been supported with, I am an Everton player, I will use this as motivation.”

McNeil will have additional competition for a place in the Everton side as he returns to the Hill Dickinson Stadium as the Toffees secured the services of Chelsea winger Tyrique George on loan for the rest of the season.

Wolves wasted little time in spending some of the money they received for Jorgen Strand Larsen by completing two deadline day deals.

Former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong has moved to Molineux in a reported £7m deal as his time as a Southampton player comes to a close and he will be joined by England international Angel Gomes, who will spend the rest of the season on loan with Rob Edwards side as they look to haul themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table.

It was a good day on and off the pitch for Leeds’ former Championship promotion rivals Sunderland.

On the pitch, the Black Cats moved into the top eight with a comfortable home win against Burnley and that game took place as the finishing touches were being applied to a £17.5m deal for Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo. The Ecuador international has signed a four and a half year deal at the Stadium of Light with the option of an additional 12 months and he will replace Simon Adringa after the Black Cats winger joined Monaco on loan.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: "Nilson is an incredibly exciting prospect, and we are delighted he's chosen to join Sunderland. A quick and creative wide player, he excels in all the core actions required to impact the final third, and he arrives ambitious to make an impression. He's young but has already had many interesting experiences as a senior player domestically, on the European stage, and internationally with Ecuador. We are delighted to have completed this signing and look forward to welcoming Nilson to Wearside."

Liverpool’s attempts to add to their defensive ranks came to a successful end when they secured a reported £60m deal for Rennes centre back Jeremy Jacquet.

The France Under-21 international is believed to have been a long-term target for Premier League rivals Chelsea - but Anfield will be where he takes the next step in his career as he prepares to join the Reds at the end of the season on what Liverpool are calling ‘a long-term contract’.

Chelsea did conclude one piece of defensive business on deadline day as Axel Disasi moved on loan to West Ham United.
