Claims of late offer for West Ham United player dismissed – Transfer ruled out

West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez has been out on loan at Fenerbahçe since last summer.

The Mexico international has played 1080 minutes from 16 matches for the Turkish club. An injury partly restricted his minutes this season.

Ajax reportedly showed interest before West Ham sanctioned a loan move. Last month, De Telegraaf reported of their interest in the midfielder.

The same newspaper stated Ajax sporting director Marijn Beuker made a trip to Istanbul over a deal for Álvarez. He left the Amsterdam club for the Hammers in August 2023.

On January 23rd, Fenerbahçe sporting director Devin Özek said “many clubs” are keen on the 28-year-old. He also ruled out an exit midway through the season. That didn’t stop the Turkish press from now linking him to the Eredivisie side. It was even reported Ajax made an offer to sign him.

De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij now took to X to address these links.

The winter window in the UK closed on Monday but it’s open in the Netherlands and Turkey until Tuesday and Friday respectively. This allows Ajax to carry out new signings in the next few hours.

However, Verweij reports the latest claims from Turkey of an Ajax offer for the West Ham man can be dismissed.

He states for the Dutch club cannot sign the player directly from the Yellow Canaries. The Mexican first needs to cut short his loan stay in Turkey and return to Nuno Espírito Santo’s side. Ajax will then have to sign the midfielder from West Ham.

According to the journalist, it’s no longer possible for Álvarez to return to West Ham as of Monday evening. Subsequently, the latest rumour from Turkey has been dismissed quickly.
