Should West Ham dip into the free agent market?

By Louis Nixon

**The Transfer window is finally closed! Many believe the reinforcements the Hammers brought in weren’t sufficient, but perhaps some free agents could help bolster their side.**

There’s an abnormally large list of free agents available and perhaps some names that the Hammers could look at to bolster their side, but there’s also an awful lot of names of players who have previously been with West Ham.

The ex-players that spring to mind are the likes of Payet, Lingard, Dawson, Oxford, and Kurt Zouma. Nuno personally rejected the opportunity to sign Lingard, and it’s certainly no surprise. The manager has had his afters with Lingard and was not a fan of the player whilst having him at Forest, which, in all honesty, is probably for the better, as his West Ham ship has long sailed.

The same can be said for other names, but if we were to bring in Dawson or Zouma, perhaps, it wouldn’t come as a surprise. Nuno is currently short on central defenders and both characters would certainly provide needed leadership, but if we’re being honest, we shouldn’t be paying for someone to just be a leader, we need a player that can help too and they both are certainly past their prime.

Perhaps if Nuno wanted his side to have a tussle and give Todibo a boxing partner, Sergio Ramos would be a great candidate, but something, just something, tells me he wouldn’t want to join West Ham…

Other names, such as Saint Maximin, who was available on a free, I would suggest we should attempt to go for, but last night he was picked up by RC Lens, despite minor interest from England. The same can’t be said for Raheem Sterling, who unsurprisingly hasn’t found another club, which is probably due to his astronomical wage demands.

In all honesty, most of these players are free agents for a reason and are way past their prime. I do believe that there are a few players in the many available, such as Oxlade-Chamberlain, who could be a low-risk, high-reward signing, but barring him, there’s little to no one that could benefit the Hammers in either the short term or long term, so it’s probably best to stay away and field with what we have.
