Brentford boss Keith Andrews has explained the decision to allow Frank Onyeka join Coventry City on loan with a view to a permanent move in the summer.

Andrews admits the Nigeria international midfielder, who was the Bees’ first signing of their Premier League era, needed regular football after struggling for consistent minutes over the past couple of seasons.

The 28-year-old arrives at the Championship club with 75 top flight appearances and a season in the Bundesliga to his name, with the Sky Blues obliged to sign him permanently in June, subject to Frank Lampard guiding the club to promotion.

Onyeka joined Brentford from Danish side Midtjylland in July 2021 where he was teammates with Victor Torp, in a deal worth around €10 million, which at the time made him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

He featured regularly in midfield during his debut campaign when Brentford finished 13th to get a foothold in the Premier League.

Speaking about his departure, Bees’ head coach Andrews said: “He’s someone who has been a big part of our journey although he hasn’t had the minutes or game time that he would have liked.

“I feel it’s right that he goes on to pastures new because he’s a really good professional and a really good person. I wish him the best and I have no doubt that he will do really well.”
