Player explains why he opted for late Everton transfer amid reported Sunderland interest

Everton completed a deal for Sunderland-linked Tyrique George on deadline day.

The teenage attacker was mooted as a potential target for the Black Cats in the latter stages of the January transfer window, but has instead wrapped up a temporary move to Merseyside, with an option-to-buy clause attached.

The Toffees’ swoop for George was confirmed after Monday evening’s 7pm deadline, with all of the necessary paperwork completed in time after a deal sheet was submitted and an extension granted.

Speaking about his move to Everton, George told the club’s official website: "I’m really excited to be here and to enjoy this massive club. I just can’t wait to get started. The fans here are exceptional. I know Evertonians are really passionate. They like hard work – and that’s what I’m going to show. I want to be exciting and I want to impress them.

"The gaffer, David Moyes, was another reason [I wanted to join]. He’s an amazing manager who has coached so many players, like Wayne Rooney, and players like that. I've had a brief conversation with him and he's an amazing person as well. I just want to enjoy it, learn under him and improve."

He continued: "I feel ready, ready to make an impact. It feels like an exciting time for the club. I’m going to attack this new challenge. I want to hit the ground running as quickly as possible and hopefully I can do that. I've seen some pictures of [the Hill Dickinson Stadium]. It's massive and looks amazing, so I'm really looking forward to playing there."

For his part, Everton head coach David Moyes said: “We are pleased to have signed Tyrique on loan from Chelsea for the remainder of the season. Tyrique is a versatile forward who can play all across the front line. I hope he will settle quickly into our squad, and the support from our fans will definitely help him feel at home. We are looking forward to working with him.”

What is the latest Sunderland transfer news?

And while they might have missed out on signing George, Sunderland did complete a deal for a winger in the dying embers of the January window. Following Simon Adingra’s loan move to AS Monaco - with the option of a permanent deal attached - the Black Cats acted swiftly to bring in Ecuadorian international Nilson Angulo from Belgian outfit Anderlecht.

After the 22-year-old put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Nilson is an incredibly exciting prospect, and we are delighted he’s chosen to join Sunderland. A quick and creative wide player, he excels in all the core actions required to impact the final third, and he arrives ambitious to make an impression. He’s young but has already had many interesting experiences as a senior player domestically, on the European stage, and internationally with Ecuador. We are delighted to have completed this signing and look forward to welcoming Nilson to Wearside.”
