Exclusive: Leeds United's transfer window unpacked by finance expert as Psr points made

A football finance expert has explained why he believes Leeds United exercised caution during the winter transfer window.

Leeds pursued forward Jørgen Strand Larsen in the final weeks of the window, only to find themselves outbid by Crystal Palace.

An alternative option was not lined up and the end of the window was consequently rather anticlimactic for the Elland Road faithful.

Various reports have pointed to a strong desire from within the club to remain on the right side of profit and sustainability regulations. However, as other clubs lined up additions for hefty fees, some fans were left to ponder the reason for such pragmatism in LS11.

Leeds United’s window assessed

Speaking exclusively to The Yorkshire Post, Dr Dan Plumley of Sheffield Hallam University delved into the Leeds caution.

He said: “There’s a lot to unpack here in terms of PSR and of course moving into squad-to-cost ratios in the Premier League (a new framework voted approved for the 2026/27 season).

“We don’t know what the EFL are going to do yet, they’re on the current version of PSR. Leeds are one of those clubs that having moved between those leagues in the last couple of years, that’s where the caution comes with the regulatory framework and we know they’ve run up losses in getting promoted and getting to the Premier League. That’s where the caution comes in.

“I think there’s other factors as well. January’s always a bit cautious. Leeds will be looking at that, wanting to be a Premier League club next year, and having to look at squad-to-cost ratio, but also having one eye on the worst case scenario, looking at the Championship. That also fits in with the narrative of being a little bit cautious.”

The influence of form

Dr Plumley also believes Leeds’ upturn in form since early December may have influenced the decision not to throw cash at Daniel Farke’s squad in the dying embers of the window.

He said: “I think, looking at the table, there’s a bit of a buffer to that bottom three. West Ham have obviously spent aggressively trying to get out of there. Burnley have spent nothing, perhaps you’d expect them to do that.

“Leeds are going to be looking at their rivals and off the back of the run they’ve been on, with some good performances lately, [and thinking] ‘we back ourselves to get out of this and stay in the league with the squad we’ve got, and then look at the summer and wider’.

“I think there’s lots of factors in there and I think the regulatory framework is a big part of that. We know what the Premier League are going to do, moving away from PSR, but the EFL haven’t decided what they’re doing yet.”
