Premier League legend Peter Schmeichel has questioned how the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United missed out on Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven.
Tipsbladet cover comments from the former goalkeeper today. He was speaking on Viaplay, where he was keen to praise the Tottenham defender.
Van de Ven has been one of Tottenham’s star men since he joined in 2023. Spurs paid €40m to sign the youngster from Wolfsburg that summer, beating the likes of Liverpool to his signature at the time.
The Dutchman has proven to be worth the money since then. Now 24-years-old, he’s considered one of the best in the Premier League when fit.
His combination of defensive ability and speed have made him a formidable opponent. In fact, he’s been recorded as the fastest player in Premier League history since data started being record in 2020. That put him slightly ahead of Kyle Walker.
And that’s led to transfer speculation. Recent reports in England have stated that Van de Ven is looking to leave Tottenham this summer. Liverpool had been named as a potential destination, before their deal for Jeremy Jacquet on deadline day.
Where that leaves the Dutchman, or what options it leaves him with, remains to be seen. In the meantime, Schmeichel can’t figure out how the Reds or Manchester United didn’t get him before Tottenham anyway.
“I think he has been a revelation,” he said.
“I think he is a fantastic player. He has a really, really good understanding of the game, and his speed is so valuable if you want to play offensive football.
“I sometimes think that a club like Manchester United or maybe even Liverpool should look for someone like him. Why didn’t they discover a player like him?”
