Everton actually considered a late move to sign Raheem Sterling
According to The Athletic, Everton weighed up a move to sign Raheem Sterling after he terminated his contract with Chelsea.
Sterling left the West Londoners last week and became available on a free transfer, but the Toffees concluded that he would sign elsewhere on substantial wages.

The decision was then made to bring in his former teammate George, who has instead joined on an initial loan deal.
That allows Everton to have a close look at him for the remainder of the season before committing a portion of the summer budget on his signature.
George can also operate as a centre-forward, so he is more versatile than Sterling.
It’s shrewd business by the Friedkin Group.

The Friedkins are keen to lower the average age of the Everton squad, as it is currently the third-oldest in the Premier League.
With that said, the potential Sterling signing wouldn’t have aligned with the club’s new model, as he turned 31 in December.
