Just in: BBC journalist says Crystal Palace star 'faces surgery' in major blow for player

Crystal Palace have been dealt an injury absentee worry as one player now faces the need for surgery on a troubling issue, according to a new report this afternoon.

Crystal Palace's eventful deadline day after £80m January spend

The Eagles spent around £80 million on fresh faces over the January transfer window, securing two club-record deals in the space of a few weeks.

Oliver Glasner watched Brennan Johnson sign for big-money from Tottenham before their fee for striker Jorgen Strand Larsen eclipsed that transfer soon afterward, with Evan Guessand also signing on loan from Aston Villa.

If Guessand's deal becomes permanent at the end of the season for around £28 million, it would take Palace's winter spend to north of £100 million.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs hasn't exactly been shy when it comes to splashing the cash, even if Glasner is poised to part company with Palace once his contract expires in June.

Crystal Palace star looks finished at Selhurst Park after Strand Larsen deal

Crystal Palace had one of the more frantic January transfer windows in the Premier League.

The Eagles also failed with a last-gasp deadline day move for Everton winger Dwight McNeil, despite agreeing terms with the Toffees and the player undergoing a medical.

Once striker Jean-Philippe Mateta's sale to AC Milan went nowhere due to worries about his knee, Palace apparently attempting to change the terms last minute from a straight £20 million deal to a loan.

Glasner's side then pulled out of the move completely, according to David Ornstein, surely leaving Everton pretty furious.

Speaking of Mateta, who made all the headlines throughout January following his determination to leave Selhurst Park, the Frenchman has been dealt a blow.

Jean-Philippe Mateta faces 'surgery dilemma' after failed AC Milan move

Right after Milan pulled out of the deal for Mateta, BBC journalist Sami Mokbel reports this afternoon that the 28-year-old faces a surgery dilemma ahead of the World Cup.

Mateta failed his medical with Milan due to an ongoing knee problem, and specialists at the Rossoneri diagnosed that the issue won't be fixed by physical therapy or rehab (BBC).

Instead, Milan doctors are apparently adamant that Mateta will likely require surgery to fix the issue, which would keep him absent for an extended period.

Taking this into account, Palace's deal for Strand Larsen, who scored 14 Premier League goals for Wolves last season, looks all the more imperative.

The Norwegian has been out of form this season, but a move to London and a guarantee of top flight football next season could do wonders to resurrect his very best.
