Everton were set to sign Callum Wilson before West Ham pulled the plug

The Athletic now state that Everton were in pole position to sign Callum Wilson from West Ham – as the east Londoners prepared to terminate his contract following the arrivals of Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe.

However, after the England international scored late on to fire West Ham to a 2-1 win over Tottenham in the middle of January, those at the London Stadium opted to keep the 33-year-old around.

With Thierno Barry in fine form throughout January too with three goals in five Premier League appearances, the likelihood is that Wilson would have come in to shove Beto even further down the pecking order.

Of course, the Guinea-Bissau international netted a late equaliser at Brighton last time out after managing to keep his spot as the backup option behind Barry, but he might feel a tinge of sadness after hearing just how close Everton came to replacing him.
