Angel Gomes has spoken about the experience he gained from his time at Manchester United that has helped him on his return to the Premier League. The midfielder left United in the summer of 2020 after his contract at Old Trafford expired, going on to join Lille on a free transfer.
After five years at the Ligue 1 club, Gomes went on to sign for their French top-flight rivals Marseille last summer.
Just six months later, the 25-year-old has returned to the Premier League after completing a deadline day move to Wolves and will spend the rest of the season on loan at Molineux.
United have already played Wolves twice this season, earning four points from both Premier League fixtures, which were played in December, meaning there will be no reunion for Gomes against his former club this term.
Gomes progressed from United’s academy to make ten appearances for the club’s first team before his exit five-and-a-half years ago, and has since gone on to feature in the England squad and has earning four caps, all of which came back in 2024.
Now back in the Premier League, Gomes has spoken about the experience he gained from his time at United at the early stages of hs career
“I was young when I made my debut at United, I was young so learning a lot about the game, so it’s exciting to be back [in the Premier League],” Gomes told Wolves’ club website.
“Being around top level, elite players with England, you take in as much as you can from them.
“Coming here, I’ll try and show what I can do, what I’m about, try and be a positive addition to the team, and try to be as positive as possible to help in all aspects.”
Gomes has also reflected on what he has learned from his time in France, having left his home country at the age of 19 and has since made 154 appearances across his spells at Lille and Marseille, combined.
“Stepping out of your comfort zone, going into the unknown, as it was for me in France, a different country, it was an important step for me,” Gomes said.
“I matured a lot out there and managed to learn a new language which helps in football and life. For me, it was nothing but positive out there.
“When I arrived [at Compton Park], I spoke to some of the French lads, and obviously I can speak Portuguese and some Spanish. There’s a mixture of everything here and it’ll be nice to get in and amongst the team.”
