Michael Carrick’s appointment has been an inspired decision by Manchester United but not all are convinced that he should be given the job on a permanent basis

Sam Allardyce has told Manchester United to think very carefully before handing Michael Carrick the reins full term. The former midfielder was appointed as Red Devils’ boss earlier this month as a replacement for Ruben Amorim.
He was only put in charge until the end of the season but has impressed with three wins in a row in the Premier League. That has seen some suggest that Carrick should be retained beyond the end of the campaign.
But Allardyce has suggested that club chiefs need to bide their time before being rushed into a decision. Speaking on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, he said: “Everybody wants him [Carrick] to be appointed.
“But is it the right decision? The board are under so much pressure now, once again, given the job that they're doing. Is it the right thing to do? So they've got to be calculated, cruel, if you like.
“You've got to make sure that your next choice is not built on heart. It's not from the heart, it's from the mind. Because [Ruben] Amorim couldn't handle Man United for me.
“It's a special sort of internal desire as a player and as the manager to survive at Man United and then become successful. So you need to learn to live with it and flourish from it, not shrivel and end up getting sold on or losing your job as the manager.
“The respect and praise he’s got from the players so far, that's management, isn't it? That's not coaching. That's managing.”
Former United star Roy Keane has also given his verdict on Carrick being given the permanent job and suggested that should the Red Devils continue their current form, he would be a shoo-in.
He said: "I hope they give it to him, I hope they give it to him in the summer. I don’t think it’s the right decision, good luck with it. I’m sticking to my guns, I’ve said my piece.

“I think he’s got the job and if he gets it in the summer, you go ‘listen, good luck to him’. But as a caretaker manager, it’s a different animal to being a manager of United trying to win league titles over the next two, three, four, five years whatever it might be.
"I think you can get a better manager than Carrick, absolutely, but I think he’s doing a good job. Perfect timing for him and even if he doesn’t get the United job, these results are a bit like Ruud (van Nistelrooy) and he can get another job. He’ll probably get a Premiership manager (job).
"But just because you’re doing well at United, doesn’t mean he’ll do well at another club. He’s got the players back, it’s all been sliding doors moments. Great for him and he’s taken advantage of it."
United will be aiming to extend their brilliant form this weekend as they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
