Manchester United have held talks over a deal to sign Wolves midfielder Mateus Mane for the summer, according to Sports Boom.
The Red Devils are planning to move to revitalise their midfield in the summer, with the club exploring deals for players such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba as top targets to replace Casemiro, who has been confirmed to be leaving when his contract expires at the end of the season.
However, they are not the only targets, and it's possible that other players could also be on the move out of Old Trafford this summer, which has seen alternative options being looked into.
Man Utd Hold Talks for Mateus Mane
Mateus Mane
Mane, who has been described as 'special', is capable of playing across the front line as a winger or number ten, but has broken into the Wolves team under Rob Edwards as a central midfielder, and has impressed hugely.
One of the clubs most impressed by his performances has been Man Utd, and it's reported that the 20-time English champions held talks with Wolves over a deal to sign the talent. The 18-year-old recently signed a new long-term contract at Molineux, and that has led to the club slapping an 'eye-watering' asking price on his head, of around £50m.
That price put United off proceeding with talks for now, but it's believed that with Wolves likely to be relegated to the Championship this season, he could become available for less in the summer window.
Wolves are hopeful that they will be able to retain the player, or at least his big valuation, having sold Jorgen Strand Larsen to Crystal Palace for £48m on deadline day, as they are under no pressure to sell financially.
Man Utd and Wolves have a good relationship, with United having sealed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha last summer in a deal worth £62.5m, and that could help them in negotiations.
Mane is a Supreme Talent Who Can Help Man Utd
Kobbie Mainoo
United's midfield is in desperate need of an overhaul, but any decisions on which players come in must consider the fact that Kobbie Mainoo should be the main man going forward.
With his ability to play in tight spaces, defend the midfield, break up play and also dictate games with his passing, someone with more of an engine and defensive mentality would be perfect, hence the links to the aforementioned names.
But Mainoo can't play every game, and Bruno Fernandes is getting older, so more offensive names shouldn't be ruled out either, and that's where Mane comes in. An electric young talent, it's the sort of signing Man Utd used to make under Sir Alex Ferguson, and for the right price it would be an excellent bit of business.
