Sunderland said goodbye to Simon Adingra and signed Nilson Angulo on deadline day, but how does that affect the market value standings within the squad?
What had previously been a quiet January transfer window for Sunderland took a dramatic turn on deadline day.
Summer signing Simon Adingra departed on a shock loan to AS Monaco, with the French side holding the option to make the move permanent this summer. The Black Cats acted quickly, however, signing Ecuador international Nilson Angulo from Belgian giants Anderlecht.
Back-up goalkeeper Melker Ellborg and Ivorian youngster Jocelin Ta Bi also arrived at the Stadium of Light during the winter, while Anthony Patterson and Arthur Masuaku were loaned out alongside popular but out-of-favour midfielder Dan Neil. Patrick Roberts’ loan to Birmingham City was also made permanent. But where has all that transfer activity left the market value of Sunderland’s squad?

According to Transfermarkt, record signing Habib Diarra remains Sunderland’s most valuable player at €32m. He’s just high up the list by fellow summer arrivals like Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey, as well as talented youngster Chris Rigg, who will be desperate for more opportunities in the near future. In terms of value on the pitch, Granit Xhaka has undoubtedly been the standout star for the Black Cats this season, but he sits quite far down the list due to him being 33 years of age.

Robin Roefs’ €18m value is a €6m increase on when he joined the club from NEC Nijmegen in the summer, and makes him the fourth-most valuable 23-and-under goalkeeper in the Premier League, only behind compatriot Mark Verbruggen (€35m), Manchester United’s Senne Lammens (€25m) and Manchester City’s James Trafford (€25m).
Roefs sneaks into the top 10 among Sunderland players, just ahead of defensive trio Dan Ballard (€16m), Nordi Mukiele (€15m) and Omar Alderete (€12m). New signing Angulo has a market value of just €7m, which is even less than seldom-used left-back Dennis Cirkin (€8m). However, his value is based on his time in the Belgian Pro League and is sure to increase upon Transfermarkt’s next update. The bottom of the list is dominated by out-of-favour squad players, while 35-year-old back-up goalkeeper Simon Moore has the lowest market value in Regis Le Bris’ squad at €100k.
