Romano: Nottingham Forest made £14m bid for 'quality' Premier League player on Deadline Day

Nottingham Forest tried their best to bolster their ranks during a far less chaotic Transfer Deadline Day.

The Reds only added one player on the final day, with Luca Netz joining the club from Borussia Monchengladbach to bolster the defensive ranks.

Lorenzo Lucca and Stefan Ortega signed for Forest earlier in the window, and all-in-all, it felt like a sensible transfer window from the club’s perspective.

Arne Engels was one of a number of players wanted by Forest at the eleventh hour, but ultimately that move fell through, with Celtic unwilling to sell.

Now, news of another deal that Forest wanted to complete has emerged as the Reds tried frantically to bolster their squad further with the clock ticking.

Nottingham Forest wanted David Moller Wolfe

According to Fabrizio Romano, Forest and Roma both made a play to sign Wolves star Wolfe for £14 million in the 24 hours leading up to the transfer deadline.

Wolfe has been the first choice left-back this season for the club, who sit rock-bottom of the Premier League, and he was a wanted man during the window.

Wolfe has made 15 appearances for Wolves this season, having checked in from AZ Alkmaar in the summer and has kicked on since Rob Edwards came to the club.

Vitor Pereira called Wolfe ‘quality’ when he was in charge of the hapless West Midlands outfit, and it’s clear that the 23-year-old does have some capabilities in the Premier League.

Forest right to sign Netz instead

The German left-back has over 100 appearances in the Bundesliga to his name at the age of just 22, and given that he’s cost just £2 million, there feels less risk attached to this deal.

Wolfe has clearly not been flawless this season, given that Wolves are going to be relegated to the Championship at some point in the coming months.

Netz feels like a signing with one eye on the future and hopefully, he can back Neco Williams up well and grasp any opportunities when they come his way.

Wolfe smacked of desperation a little bit and it wouldn’t have been a great look to have been signing defenders from the team rooted to the foot of the Premier League.
