Hull City boss explains how versatile Man Utd loanee Toby Collyer can 'improve' Championship side

After a difficult loan spell at West Brom during the first half of the season, Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer is looking to kick on after agreeing on a temporary deal at Hull City.

Manchester United were busy extending their loanee list in the final days of the January transfer window.

One list of loanees includes Toby Collyer after the 22-year-old joined Hull City on loan for the rest of the season.

It marks Collyer’s second Championship move of the 2025/26 campaign, after being recalled from West Brom.

Collyer joins a Hull City side currently sitting third in the Championship, so a strong end to the season could see them gain promotion to the Premier League.

It would be great – from a United perspective at least – to see Collyer play an influential role in Hull City’s bid to return to the top flight, but he will be hoping to stay fit after spending too much time out injured while at West Brom.

Sergej Jakirovic keen on Toby Collyer’s energy in midfield

Hull City dropped points in the Championship on Tuesday night following a scoreless draw with Watford, but Collyer was not ready to make his debut.

Collyer returned to Old Trafford from West Brom at the beginning of January with an injury, so he will need time on the training ground with his new teammates before being thrown into competitive action.

However, Collyer’s injury can’t be too serious if Hull City were keen to bring him to the club for the remainder of the season.

It certainly sounds like Collyer has the backing of Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic, who revealed his reasons for signing the United academy graduate on loan following a disappointing draw against Watford.

“We are struggling in midfield and we will try to find some solutions,” Jakirovic said, as quoted by journalist Simon Peach.

“He’s [Collyer] 100% an option for us. He’s something between number 6 and 8, a lot of energy, 12k per game, so I think he can improve us a lot in this part of the team.”

It remains to be seen when Collyer will return to full fitness and make his eagerly awaited debut for Hull City.

Toby Collyer joins Hull City before ex-Man Utd star departs

Collyer may have thought that he would be teammates with former United left-back Brandon Williams when he joined Hull City, but that is no longer the case.

Williams left Hull City by mutual agreement this week and begins his search for a new club, after lasting just five months at the Championship outfit, having signed a one-year deal with the option of a second season.

That said, Collyer’s loan move to Hull City is not about making friends and sticking to his comfort zone. It’s about stepping away from United and showing he can stand on his own two feet in the Championship.

Everyone at Old Trafford will be wishing Collyer the best at Hull City for the remainder of the season.
