Newcastle United contract situations following quiet January transfer window

What are the latest contract situations at Newcastle United following a quiet January transfer window?

The January transfer window is over, and for many Newcastle United fans, it was a very disappointing one.

But while most of the focus will now return to matters on the pitch, those behind the scenes at St. James’ Park will be hard at work addressing the contract situations of Newcastle’s current crop.

When do the contracts of current Newcastle United players come to an end?

Summer 2026:Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär, Mark Gillespie, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, Aaron Ramsdale (loan), Max Thompson, Alfie Harrison

Summer 2027:Nick Pope, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock

Summer 2028:Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimarães, Alex Murphy

Summer 2029: Will Osula, Lewis Miley, Odysseas Vlachodimos (reported)

Summer 2031: Nick Woltemade

Summer 2030: Anthony Elanga, Sven Botman, Antonio Cordero

As it stands, Newcastle are in danger of losing eight players this summer. Some cases are more urgent than others, however.

For example, we already know that Matt Targett’s deal will not be renewed, and the left-back has proven popular on loan at Middlesbrough this season in any event. Meanwhile, it’s very highly likely that Emil Krafth, Mark Gillespie, Max Thompson and Alfie Harrison will leave the club at the end of this season as they play little or no part in the first team picture.

The futures of Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schär are less clear, though, with both players still featuring prominently both on the pitch and in the dressing room, despite their advancing age. Aaron Ramsdale is also one to keep an eye on as we wait and see whether or not Newcastle will make his loan from Southampton permanent.

There is further work to do ahead of the summer of 2027, with prominent first-teamers Nick Pope, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock all in the final 18 months of their contracts. Finally, midfield trio Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, and talented right-back Tino Livramento will be closely monitored by the club as they race toward the final two years of their contracts, given the indispensable roles they play for Eddie Howe.
