Praise for player after Nottingham Forest offer rejected – Explanation why they could say no

VfB Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth has explained why the club rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest for centre-back Ramon Hendriks late in the January transfer window.

Transfermarkt.de cover comments from him today. Those comments come after Nottingham Forest made a late bid for the 24-year-old before Monday’s deadline.

Stuttgart’s sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth confirmed over the weekend that they had rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest for the player. Borussia Dortmund were then linked with a move, but that never happened either.

In the meantime, manager Sebastian Hoeneß then explained on Tuesday why the Swabian club isn’t currently considering letting the defender depart.

“We have big plans for Ramon. He has developed in the way we hoped for a year and a half ago,” he said.

“He has reached a new level and can still grow even further. His personality is also excellent.”

Hendrink has impressed since his arrival. He’s impressed since joining from Feyenoord in 2024, alternating between centre-back and left-back. He’s now a regular starter under Hoeneß. This season he’s Stuttgart’s second-most played centre-back.

That caught Nottingham Forest’s eye. A report from Germany on deadline day stated they sent an inquiry for him on Sunday. This was valued at €15m but was not a written offer. It was immediately rejected either way. And Wohlgemuth insists that was done thanks to their work in recent years.

“Just as we will not abandon our sporting goals, we will not abandon Ramon Hendriks,” he added.

“Over the last three years, we have increasingly freed ourselves from the dependence on having to make transfers to meet our financial targets.”
