Liverpool's new£60m signing was just humbled by ex-Man United star in 3-0 thumping

Manchester United’s biggest rivals Liverpool were active in the January transfer window and there were mixed reports about the Red Devils trying to hijack the deal.

On deadline day, Liverpool completed a £60 million deal for defender Jeremy Jacquet, who is set to complete his move to Merseyside in the summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano denied reports that United tried to hijack the Jacquet deal after rumours circled that the Red Devils were involved.

Instead, United had a quiet January window and are staying patient until the summer to try to land their top targets.

For any United fans who may have been upset at not getting involved in the Jacquet deal, his latest performance suggests the Red Devils were right to stay away.

Jeremy Jacquet was exposed by former Man United star

In his first match since his £60 million move was announced, Jacquet had a nightmare performance as Rennes were beaten 3-0 by Marseille in Ligue 1.

Outlet GetFootballNewsFrance gave Jacquet a disappointing 5/10 rating for his performance and said his “price tag is already hanging over each performance”.

Interestingly, Jacquet was up against Carrington graduate Mason Greenwood, and the former United forward ran riot against the 20-year-old defender.

The report adds that Jacquet “looked exposed defensively in the second half, especially with Greenwood’s pace on the counter-attack”.

Greenwood scored Marseille’s second goal of the game and also registered an assist, taking his tally for the season up to 22 goals and eight assists.

Man United already have a better Jeremy Jacquet

United were never going to get involved in the Jacquet deal, especially as the Red Devils already have a very talented roster of young defenders.

In 2024, United raided Ligue 1 side Lille for a £52m deal for Leny Yoro, and there is huge excitement about the 20-year-old’s potential.

There is also Ayden Heaven, who at just 19 years old has put in some very accomplished Premier League appearances this season.

Tyler Fredricson also made his first-team breakthrough under Ruben Amorim. Carrick has found success with a defensive partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire, and Matthijs de Ligt is still yet to come back into the picture.

United’s defensive department is already strong, so Jacquet was never needed.
