Top target: Ineos readying Man Utd move to sign big Dorgu upgrade who's shades of Rio - opinion

Injuries or absences could still derail this season, although Manchester United's current squad looks more than capable of securing Champions League qualification, not least with the Old Trafford side now left with little in the way of distraction.

A defining summer lies ahead, with uncertainty over so many first-team futures, yet under the guidance of Michael Carrick, the Red Devils are all working toward that one collective goal.

Indeed, the recent resurgence has been led by United's experienced spine, all of whom could be elsewhere next season.

Casemiro, already confirmed to be leaving in June, is playing like a man possessed. So too is the returning Harry Maguire, even with the Englishman's own contract heading toward expiry.

Even Bruno Fernandes, having teased a possible post-World Cup exit, is in rampant mood, with Carrick hopefully set to provide a real platform to build on ahead of a seismic summer of recruitment.

It gets said every year, but 2026 really could be a significant junction for those in Manchester, with so many areas to address, not least in the dugout.

On the pitch, the loss of Casemiro, and uncertainty over Fernandes, has sparked the need for at least two new midfielders ahead of next term, with the shift to a 4-2-3-1 having exposed the lack of depth in the senior ranks.

As reported in Spain, those two targets could well be Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth's Alex Scott, with INEOS chasing two exciting English talents who are Premier League-proven.

That pair could be part of a €200m (£172m) summer spree, as per the report, with the final name representing something of a fresh target, in the form of Newcastle United's Lewis Hall.

Like compatriots Anderson and Scott, the 21-year-old is deemed to be at the 'top' of United's summer wishlist, viewed as the perfect rival and successor to fellow England star, Luke Shaw, at left-back.

With Patrick Dorgu now seen in a more offensive role, that defensive berth has become another priority, with Hall potentially representing the perfect summer pick.

Why Hall could be another Ferdinand at Man Utd

English talent might come at a premium, but United's recent history has been littered by high-profile, homegrown signings from within the top-flight, be it Maguire, Carrick, Wayne Rooney or Rio Ferdinand.

In the case of the latter man, his arrival from rivals Leeds United showcased the real turning tide of Premier League finances at the start of the 21st Century, snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson for a then British record fee of £30m.

The elegant centre-back - who was just 23 at the time - had previously come through West Ham United's academy, prior to moving to Elland Road, having cemented a regular role for himself at international level.

He would, of course, go on to prove one of the defining defenders of his generation, with the Premier League Hall of Famer collecting five top-flight titles, alongside a raft of other honours.

Whether Hall can follow suit remains to be seen, although there is a real similarity in his recent rise, having also been on the books at a London side initially, have broken through at Chelsea as a teenager.

A £28m switch to boyhood club Newcastle followed, with the youngster having since made 82 appearances in all competitions, while emerging as a real "shining light" under Eddie Howe, as the Magpies boss has himself stated.

Already capped twice for his country too, Hall looks like being the long-term successor to Shaw for the Three Lions, having the chance to nail down that defensive berth for the decade ahead, much like Ferdinand did in his pomp.

Such has been his displays of late, he is now recognised as arguably "one of the best left-backs in the Premier League", in the view of talent scout Jacek Kulig.

The aforementioned Dorgu, while an asset, appears far better suited to a more advanced berth, with his best form having come across his last eight games before injury, netting against Newcastle, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Hall, therefore, would be the perfect full-back upgrade and perfect asset to slot in behind him, having repeatedly shown his class at Old Trafford in recent years.

Indeed, both of his two Newcastle goals have come at the Theatre of Dreams, volleying home as the away side triumphed in the Carabao Cup in November 2023, while rifling in what proved to be a stunning consolation in the Red Devils' 3-2 win later that season.

Even this term, Hall's brilliance was on full display, despite his side losing 1-0, completing six successful dribbles and winning 13 duels on that December night - more than any other player.

He's already one of the best in the business, and looks destined to shine on the international stage, with there certainly shades of that bold deal to prise the impressive Ferdinand from Yorkshire all those years ago.
