Opinion: How Man Utd’s failed Baleba chase and Semenyo snub may have unlocked monstrous double transfer swoop

Ineos have now held their nerve in two consecutive transfer windows despite public pressure, and it is because it unlocks a monstrous double swoop instead.

It started with the failed transfer chase of Carlos Baleba in the summer, which was ambitious at best, unrealistic at worst.

Once Brighton didn’t budge on their valuation, Man Utd moved on. Following that, the walk-away came from the player this time.

Are you happy with Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe?

Antoine Semenyo chose to go to Man City instead, and the clamour among Man Utd fans was one of “missing out”, but Ineos have a long-term plan in mind.

Man Utd have patiently navigated two failures

As reported previously, Ineos are doing a fine job of fixing a Glazer error of getting caught up in the “FOMO” sentiment and making panic signings.

Striking out on two consecutive transfer deals, and marquee ones at that, all while being in the middle of a managerial upheaval, hurt Ineos’ stock tremendously.

It would have been easy to throw out their transfer plans and sign someone out of pure desperation just to quieten the noise around the club.

However, they patiently navigated both those failures, not just because the long-term plan is in place, but because they could be a blessing in disguise.

How? Because it might just have unlocked a monstrous double transfer swoop next summer at the perfect time.

Ineos’ monstrous transfer swoop will be just reward

When United went for Baleba and Semenyo, they did so from a position of weakness, as they were not in any European competitions, and Amorim was hardly convincing as the head coach.

Is Elliot Anderson the standout midfield option for Manchester United?

Moreover, Baleba was priced out of a move, which frustrated him, and his value has undoubtedly gone down this season.

As for Semenyo, United were saved from themselves because no fan wants a player at Old Trafford who doesn’t want to be here.

Since that snub, United have also received clarity over Casemiro’s future, who’s set to leave the club in the summer, while getting further clarity that Manuel Ugarte is just not “IT”.

It’s the perfect storm of events, as not only will United attack the next window as a team in Europe (hopefully the UCL), but they’ll do so having the war chest they would have spent on Baleba and Semenyo.

This means that they can launch another raid for Baleba, who should be cheaper now with another year of his contract down, plus his form this season.

Then comes the player to make it a monstrous double swoop, as Elliot Anderson has shot up the transfer priority ranks with irresistible displays this season.

He won’t come cheap, and it’s likely that United wouldn’t have gone for him in the summer had they kept Amorim, landed Baleba, or Semenyo chosen them instead.

However, now, they are in a prime position to strike with a war chest, prospective European place, and Baleba on top of it all.

Good things come to those who wait, and United’s reward for staying patient might just be a transformational summer in midfield by landing two of the top midfielders in the Premier League right now.
