The latest Aston Villa transfer news following the winter window deadline.

Unai Emery could have had more financial wiggle room on transfer deadline day, but an Aston Villa youngster rejected a move away.

It was well documented that the Villans had very limited ability to make moves at the end of the winter window due to a need to sell before buying, hence how quiet they were. An additional small sale wouldn’t have completely transformed things, but it could at least have given Villa some scope to bring some joy on deadline day.

Emery has recently expressed his content with the players he has got and insists the current crop are capable of achieving the club’s objective of finishing in the Premier League top five. But Champions League qualification is by no means a certainty and some fresh faces could have made the task much simpler.

Villa accepted £6m bid for striker

Some funds may have been available if Rory Wilson was keen on a move to Germany. The Athletic has revealed that Villa accepted an offer from Hoffenheim for the promising young striker, a loan with the option to buy for around €7 million (£6m). As Wilson is yet to break into the senior team, Villa were happy to let him go.

But Wilson wasn’t able to agree on personal terms with Hoffenheim, and so the deal didn’t go ahead as planned. The Athletic’s report suggests Wilson wasn’t given strong enough assurances that he would be part of Hoffenheim’s senior team rather than the youth setup, with the route to progression seen as insufficient.

Wilson, who has scored seven goals in 12 competitive appearances for Villa’s under-21 side so far this season, was on the verge of leaving last summer but agreed a new contract just before his old deal was due to expire. The current Scotland Under-21 international is highly thought of by Villa’s academy staff, but Hoffenheim’s offer was too good to turn down.

Tielemans and Barkley to stay longer than expected

In other Villa news, confusion over the duration of Youri Tielemans’ and Ross Barkley’s contract lengths has now been cleared up, with both players’ deals found to have more time left than first thought.

Many of the Villa Park faithful were under the impression that Tielemans’ contract was going to expire in June 2027, prompting concerns that the Belgium international could soon leave for free or in a cut-price deal. In Barkley’s case, many Villa fans thought he was set to leave at the end of the current season.

The truth, it turns out, is different. After doing some digging, The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell reports that Tielemans’ terms actually expire in June 2028 – a huge boost. Similar can be said for Barkley, with the former England international having an extra year than presumed. Barkley, unless sold, will remain at Villa Park until June 2027.
